Sneak Attack!

gerg and I were secretly attacked by the flu last week.

We've been so sick that I forgot about my new sneakers!

4 weeks back, I started doing cardio kick boxing and pilates in the morning.
My awesome Nike AF1s from Robert's Shoe Store just don't cut it for kickboxing, dude...even if you sukk at kick boxing like I do. They're just NOT the appropriate shoe.

So I bought these totally RAD classic Reebok sneakers for kicking ass in the morning. I read somewhere on the internet that blue inspires PRODUCTIVITY...I hope it also inspires amazing roundhouse kicks.

EE Cummings Making Me Mad!

"I am so glad and very"
e.e. cummings

I am so glad and very
merely my fourth will cure
the laziest self of weary
the hugest sea of shore

so far your nearness reaches
a lucky fifth of you
turns people into eachs
and cowards into grow

our can'ts were born to happen
our mosts have died in more
our twentieth will open
wide a wide open door

we are so both and oneful
night cannot be so sky
sky cannot be so sunful
i am through you so i

-------------------------------------

I especially love the last stanza. Madly. Deeply. Love it.

But I quite put my finger on what the "fourth" "fifth" and "twentieth" mean, and it's maddening.

He's given 1/4 of himself/his life, and she 1/5?

4x5=20. Coincidence?

My poetry-writing mentor, Doug Flaherty, and I have been volleying ideas back and forth, but are still waiting.

We stumbled across this interpretation: "I see this as about different lives -- maybe by your 4th or your 20th life you get something right. Maybe it's even lives within one lifetime. Maybe it's about the different people we are in different situations, too."

Still, I'm not convinced.

It'll Taste Good if You Prepare Yourself

You know how sometimes you prepare yourself for something to taste SUPER good, and then it's only "Meh"?

This is one of those recipes you should make. HOWEVER, when you're eating it, remember that it's GOOD for you, and then you won't be pissed when it doesn't taste like buttery oatmeal raisin cookies.

We made these bars this weekend, and shared them with a couple of BROHAMS who agreed that they tasted pretty darn good for something pretty darn healthful.

Healthful Oatmeal Raisin Bars

Ingredients:
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons margarine, softened (or butter)
2 egg whites
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 cup big, fat raisins
1/2 cup sugar (for honey, use 7/8 cup for every cup of sugar, reduce the liquid in the recipe by 3 tablespoons)
3/4 cup apple butter or applesauce
2 tablespoons skim milk
1-1/2 cups all-purpose whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 cups rolled oats, quick or old-fashioned, uncooked

Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Beat together sugars and margarine until blended. Add apple butter, egg whites, milk, and vanilla; beat well.

Add combined flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt and mix well.

Stir in oats and raisins and mix well.

Spread dough in greased 13-by-9-inch baking pan.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until light brown.

Cool before cutting into bars.

Recipe makes 32 bars.

Cruisin' for a Bruisin

I've snowboarded once.
I am the worst snowboarder in the history of the world.

The cute hat that Suzy made for me is the cutest thing about my snowboarding outing last year.

See those two girls on their butts on the hill? They fell down a lot.
See the girl dying on the hill behind them? That's me. I fell down a lot.
I spent more time on my butt than on my feet! I also laughed a lot.

See that guy totally RAWKING? That's gerg. He's the rad.

So this weekend, I'm trying again. I figure I owe myself a good bruising. I've been pretty good to myself lately, and I think it's time for me to suffer a little.

I'm primarily concerned with one rule that I read on the Afton Alps web site:
Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.

Um, I pretty much can guarantee that I won't be able to stay and control. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to stop and will wipe out at the bottom of the hill.

Dallas Orbiter RAWKS The Varsity

Dallas Orbiter hosted a wham, bam, but not too glam rock show at The Varsity this weekend to introduce their new album, Motorcycle Diagrams.

The Varsity looked super sexy, and the bartender was mixing things up fiercely. *hiccup* The music? It was Dallas Orbiter. It was awesome. Duh.

It was a crucial show. Read all about it on How Was The Show. Also, check out the How Was the Show photos, which are much better than mine.

"..... nothing came off as showy or forced, it just seemed like exactly the right the thing at exactly the right time, much like Dallas Orbiter themselves could be in the coming months." - How Was The Show

"You guys, that was the best show ever!" - Mike Reed, Dallas Orbiter's #1 fan.

"Gerg was so F*&%ing HAWT up there!" - Reetsyburger, groupie and Gerg enthusiast

"Great show last night. Super glad I made it for the last 5 songs. Awesome! Terrific job fellas." David Foureyes, local handsome dude and expert on chicken wings.

Here's a photo I took of them rokking out. See the whole set here.

Thanks for Not Doing That

I'd like to thank all who attended our NYE bash this year.
Thanks for helping me quaff a magnum of Freixenet Brut.

Also, thank you for not leaving tampons on our sofa.

SERIOUSLY. Thanks for not doing that.

Unfortunately, I have to work that morning, and I don't have TiVO. Somehow I've got to see Dallas Orbiter RAWK the KARE 11 Morning Show this Friday, even if it means that I have to haul out the VCR from the closet and try to program the bastid.

These guys right here---these are the guys...
